Everyone Loves a Crafternoon at the NY Public Library

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

We did it! Jessica Pigza and I hosted a very successful, first-ever Crafternoon at the New York Public Library, and I couldn’t be happier about it. The library provided us with a gorgeous room in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building and our guest authors Jessica Vitkus and Hannah Rogge guided the 40-some attendees with fantastic demos. Jessica V. showed off some beautiful paper-piercing techniques and Hannah gave instructions on how to fashion some really cool earrings using hardware store materials.

We had a robust turnout of folks from all over New York City and beyond. People heard about the event in a variety of ways, from reading about it on the library’s website to receiving an email about it from The Bead Society! Thanks to everyone who helped spread the good word, and thanks to everyone who came out to get crafty. It was a vibrant group of warm and engaging people, and it bodes very well for the future events. We even raised some money for the library with our raffle!

Our next Crafternoon is on October 10th from 2-4pm and will be featuring Sabrina Gschwandtner, author of  KnitKnit and Teva Durham, the author of Loop-d-Loop and Loop-d-Loop Crochet, and one of the knitters featured in KnitKnit. The last event was so inspiring and exhilirating, and I know that this one will be incredible, too. I hope to see you there!

First Crafternoon at the New York Public Library This Saturday!

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Join me and crafty librarian Jessica Pigza  this Saturday, September 12th, as we kick off the Handmade:Crafternoon series at the New York Public Library! We’ll be stepping into high DIY-gear with our Alternative Crafts Day. Hannah Rogge, author of Hardwear and Save This Shirt and Jessica Vitkus, author of Alternacrafts, will demo some cool craft projects to make with stuff you can find in your recycling bin, your sewing kit and your tool box.

We will have some materials on hand to share, but if you would like to be sure to have what you need to make a pair of hardware-inspired earrings, please bring with you:
–from the hardware store: 10 #8 flat washers
–from the craft store: 2 french earring wires

And if you happen to have embroidery floss and/or needle nose pliers to share with your fellow crafters, please bring them along!

Handmade Crafternoon at the NYPL: Alternative Crafts

Date and time: Saturday, September 12, 2009 2:00 – 4:00pm
Location: Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (aka the Ghostbusters Branch) , 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue , The Margaret Liebman Berger Forum (Room #227, located in the northeast corner of the second floor).

If you can’t make it in September, save the date for another crafty adventure later this fall! Every Handmade:Crafternoon at the NYPL will include a hands-on project, an inspiring spread of vintage books and magazines from the Library’s collections, and appearances by special guest makers and authors. We will also have a raffle to raise money for the library, featuring fabulous crafty prizes. All events will be held in the same location, and I’ll be at every one, so I hope to see you soon!
