A Love Letter to Love and Letters

Monday, February 14th, 2011

I want to give it up for all the people out there who like to get crafty.

The talented artists like Athena Preston, Senior Associate Craft Editor at Martha Stewart Living.

Athena is the person who championed Handmade Crafternoon at the NYPL and got us into Martha Stewart Living. She has worked tirelessly to get the word out about Crafternoon. She deserves the highest high five!

Last Saturday she spoke about crafting for the magazine to our huge crowd of NYPL crafters. Give it up for the patient bunch that stood in line for our Valentine Making Handmade Crafternoon at the NYPL!

I have to holler at my incredibly creative Handmade Crafternoon co-host Jessica Pigza. Jessica works so hard to make sure we can have this amazing FREE event at her incredible workplace, and I truly thank her for it.

Let’s give it up for all the cool ladies who make lovely valentines.

And the tough guys who get in touch with their softer side. They are not afraid to show their crafting steez, even though the man in the button-down is Paul Barman, accomplished MC.

While I’m at it, I need to offer the most love and the biggest thanks to my husband Rufus, the fellow in the centaur sweatshirt. He is the most supportive dude out there and endlessly inspires me with his artistry. He is always there for me, even at Crafternoon.

Big love to my mom Pam and my future sister-in-law Emmy, as well as a bevy of lovely cousins who came to check out the event. The crafting gene is strong in our family!

I want to shout out to the good people at Martha Stewart Crafts and Martha Stewart Living who donated a million of the coolest, swoonworthiest crafting tools for our last event.

Their generosity was jaw dropping. Glitter, glue, punches, and phenomenal scissors were all joyfully used last weekend, and we’ll be breaking them out at future Handmade Crafternoons.

Thanks to them, our crafters were able to display their countless ways to say I Love You.

Give it up for my talented friend Steve Alvarez who made the exquisite valentine in the lower left corner of the photo below.

And finally, I’d like to raise a glass to Martha Stewart herself, who was kind enough to have us on her show (watch the clip here)¬†AND blog about us!

So this Valentine’s Day, share your love with those you love, and craft up a hearty storm. The best way to stay warm in the bleak midwinter? With love, laughs, and lots of paper hearts.

Crafting Gratitude

Monday, February 7th, 2011

I’d like to offer my deepest thanks to the good folks at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

They’ve been so amazing about getting the word out about Handmade Crafternoon at the NYPL. Our turnout this weekend was amazing, and their generosity was astonishing.

I’d like to give them piles and piles of thanks, like the piles and piles of supplies they provided our guests with.

I’ll post a full recap of last week’s adventures in a day or two, but in the meantime, if you haven’t seen our segment on the show, you can check it out here. As my brother’s fiancee wrote on her valentine, “Love reigns!”

Handmade Crafternoon…on Martha Stewart TV!

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Hello, crafty friends. Tune in at 10am EST today to watch me and my Handmade Crafternoon co-host Jessica Pigza as we talk crafts and inspiration on the Martha Stewart Show!

You can watch a preview and hear Martha Stewart say the word “Crafternoon” right here. Yes, that is the truth – she said Crafternoon! I still can’t believe it’s real. It feels very wonderful and magical.

Jessica and I will celebrate the TV appearance, the story in the February issue of Martha Stewart Living (and the super cool iPad version of the issue) this Saturday from 2-4pm when we host some of the incredibly talented ladies from Martha Stewart Living at the New York Public Library for a valentine making extravanganza.

We are honored that editor-in-chief Vanessa Holden will be on hand along with my dear friend and Senior Associate Craft Editor Athena Preston. They will be generously donating all kinds of luscious supplies for us to use, and Athena will demo some valentine crafts.

I’d like to point out that the shots above were taken backstage by my supportive and kind husband Rufus as Jessica and I rehearsed our segments. He deserves a world of thanks for being the best guy ever. And I’d like to thank everyone at the Martha Stewart Show for making us feel right at home, especially the lovely producer Lenore Welby, who stood in for Martha Stewart as we practiced our parts.

When I had my first valentine making party so many years ago, I never would have dreamed it would turn into something so incredible. I am truly grateful to the folks at Martha Stewart for spreading the word and sharing the love. It really is a dream-come-true. I hope you’ll come to the NYPL and get crafty with us!
