Hand-Made Crafternoons at The New York Public Library – Spring 2013
Join me and my co-host, the lovely and talented rare books curator Jessica Pigza for our hands-on crafting workshops at the New York Public Library. These events are free and open to the public, and supplies are provided. This series takes place at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, Margaret Liebman Berger Forum (on the Second Floor, Room 227). That’s the big library with the lions out front! Reservations are welcome because space is limited. To reserve your spot, please write to handmade@nypl.org with your name and the date of the event you wish to attend. They are a wonderful gathering for the crafting community, so we hope to see you there!
Saturday, March 9th from 2-4pm: Beading with Bert & Dana Freed of Well Done Experience
Special guests will be mother and daughter bead artists Bert and Dana Freed. They’ll share some beading skills and discuss their creative DIY outreach as founders of A Well Done Experience. This is our first beading Crafternoon, and we are thrilled about it! Additional info can be found on the library’s website.

Saturday, April 20th from 2-4pm: Amy Azzarito from Design*Sponge
Amy is a former NYPL employee (she helped create the NYPL video series Design by the Book). She’s now managing editor of the popular blog Design*Sponge. Her new book, Past and Present: 24 Favorite Moments in Decorative Arts History and 24 Modern DIY Projects Inspired by Them comes out this spring. Amy show us how to make a project from her book, and we’ll have some wonderful decorative arts books from the library’s collections for browsing. March 3, 2012 The NY Guild of Handweavers Members of the New York Guild of Handweavers will demonstrate the basic tenets of handweaving and share some information and inspiration about this textile art. You’ll be able to try your hand at weaving with a little DIY loom and watch other looms in action as well.
April 14, 2012 Noah Scalin, author of Skulls, Unstuck, and 365, will share with us some ideas for kickstarting our own creativity every day.
May 12, 2012 Jennifer Paganelli, author of the books Girls World and Happy Home and designer of the vibrant and joyful Sis Boom fabric line, will show us how to make festive garlands.

A Valentine’s Crafternoon

I’m thrilled to return to The Brooklyn Museum, where I’ll be leading a workshop on how to make creative collage pieces inspired by love and Valentine’s Day.
There is a $15 materials fee, and registration is required. Register at www.museumtix.com or at the Museum’s Visitor Center. A limited number of free tickets are reserved for Museum members on a first-come, first-served basis. Members should call (718) 501-6326 for tickets.

September 10, 2011 design*sponge celebrated the release of their new book with a hands-on crafting demo at Handmade Crafternoon! Author Grace Bonney demonstrated how to design a personal stamp and create beautiful custom-printed fabric with it!
October 15, 2011 Our delicate October Crafternoon featured talented lace designer Lisa Daehlin. Lisa showed us a few lacemaking techniques and talked all about lace. She teaches at Cooper Union, knitting shops, and elsewhere, and is an opera singer as well as lacemaker.
November 19, 2011 Join us for a feisty and fun BUST DIY Day with Debbie Stoller and Laurie Henzel. We’ll be celebrating the Bust Guide to Life by making friendship bracelets! Feel free to BYOEF (bring your own embroidery floss) in 4 different colors.
December 17, 2011 Fabric lovers, you are in luck. To say our fond farewell to 2011, we’re having a sewing party with the sweet and talented Brett Bara!

Maker Faire: Party Decor Demo at the CRAFT Booth

Join me for Maker Faire, the most completely awesome DIY tech and craft fair EVER. This event is two days long and takes place out at the New York Hall of Science. If you haven’t been before, you are in for a major treat. Learn how to do all kinds of crazy tech things,or go to a lecture on the molecular pathology of cancer. Handmade Crafternoon: Valentine Making Party with Martha Stewart Living
We spread the love by making valentines inspired by the feature story on Handmade Crafternoon in the February 2011 issue of Martha Stewart Living! The magazine sent several representatives, including Athena Preston, Senior Associate Craft Editor who gave a great talk. Vanessa Holden, Editor in Chief was also on hand, along with Cassidy Iwersen, who created some of the valentine designs featured in the magazine.We had loads of gorgeous supplies to share, generously donated by Martha Stewart Crafts. We had an evening of crafting earth-friendly gifties for all the mommas in our lives. Boring t-shirts and cloth tote bags were turned into something mommalicious with fabric paint, sequins, buttons and more. We had lots of paper from our recycling bins to turn into cute collaged bookmarks and one-of-a-kind cards.
